EPISODE #26: The Role of a Social Worker
In this episode, we will discuss the role Social Workers play in our communities. As a social worker, I work for the people that I support; I have always been a ‘helper’ and explore creative ways to make things happen, to reduce or remove barriers. Social workers believe people are capable, resourceful, creative and resilient… until they are misunderstood and misdiagnosed.
We are a diverse group of practitioners, working in a variety of sectors. I have completed informal research working in different sectors to see for myself what kind of opportunities there are to build on what we do and become more inclusive. Recgognizing that we can’t all be experts in all things, for me personally, PAE/FASD is a part of everything I do as a social worker.
Canadian social workers share the following core values:
Respect for the inherent dignity and worth of persons
Pursuit of social justice
Service to humanity
Integrity in professional practice
Confidentiality in professional practice
Competence in professional practice
